Backgrounds and Props in Storytelling

I've realized most of my Webtoon characters always interact in an open void, surrounded by speech balloons and white-space.
I've started implementing partial backgrounds as much as I can in Not So Generic. Tables, half-walls, half-tables- it honestly looks a little funny, but these little props do their job in grounding the characters and conveying actual environments my characters inhabit.

Eventually, I want to draw comprehensive digital backgrounds. I'm starting with these simple backgrounds to experiment with color and line. Backgrounds such as these allow me to add more depth to the stories I tell in my webtoon Not So Generic.

The Pencil Tool

For the most part, I only use the pen tool, but for these following illustrations, I wanted a more raw, sketchy feeling. The pencil tool has a very grainy appearance throughout and a light overlay, so it will get darker and darker as you go over the same spot.

I find delight in learning to convey all emotions, even the deepest and most minute. Not only do I want to convey joy, pride, gratitude- but sorrow too.

This chibi is traditional. I used markers and a few pencils to convey the sea water. Though I had a little practice with the digital one, I by far prefer the traditional one! :`D

Character Commissions

A little peek at some of my favorites of the Tier 4 character commissions I drew this week. If you're interested in a chibi commission, the original commission post is here.
I've really enjoyed working with the people these characters belong to!

The first commission I drew in this batch was for Melody, the author, and artist of  'Sol et Luna', a cutesy and humorous slice of life webcomic about Melody and her boyfriend Sol.

Another commission I enjoyed was Conrad for a fantasy author. He's pretty cute :`) I've been experimenting with colored lines, and adding a few more colors to my skin tones, like how I added peach to Conrad's fingers, under his eyes, and tips of his ears.

Superhero Digital Art

I am pretty proud of this one! I've been learning how to use CSP for the past couple months. As you can see in some of my most recent digital pieces, I've been experimenting with not only different but multiple different line colors.

This is my superhero OC 'Outlook', a techno-human. I used different line colors for both hair and skin, and then unified them by outlining the entire picture with a darker line.

Right now I take the color of the hair, skin, clothing, etc. and just drag the color picker a little further down and on the gray side of the color wheel.

Inktober Manga Art

Keeping up with Inktober can be difficult; the ultimate challenge to create one ink drawing, in tandem with the prompts or not, for each day of October.
Some of the prompts have been inspiring or have made me think outside the box. Other days I'm swamped with essay work.
Here are four of my #Inktober2018 Ink drawings.

I challenged my younger siblings to Inktober and told them if they worked hard at drawing one ink piece a day, I'd post their art here as well! We'll see what kinds of art the end of October brings!
